A quarter of time on the internet is spent on social networking and forums, according to data from Experian.

The data revealed that if time spent on the internet was condensed into an hour, people in the UK would spend an average of thirteen minutes on social media.

The average Brit also spends nine minutes on entertainment sites and six minutes shopping. With the UK being the worlds most prolific shopping nation, spending 10% of their time shopping. This was compared to 9% in the US and 6% in Australia.

Ben Austin, Managing Director at SEO Positive, has responded to the data with interest:

It is interesting to see just how we spend our time online and what areas of the internet people focus their time on most. It is hardly surprising that social media came out top in the research with more and more people accessing their social media on a regular basis which is why its vital that business tap into social media as part of their SEO campaign.

With the data also revealing that the UK is the most prolific for online shopping, it is also worth noting the importance of getting noticed above the competition.
